Facing The Possible

Wednesday, March 20, 2013 0
We often think of facing the impossible but have you ever stopped to think of all of the great possibilities are out there for us!  Sometimes I think gyrls (we will be using this term for all females from now on) realize there are many possibilities but we get stuck in facing and living them!  Today, I learned from my 7 month old!  The doctors' gave me so many don'ts and negative things to look forward to but I was optimistic and said we would be all odds.  She has continuously been doing that and has been enlightening.  However, today, when we sat in her first Kindermusik class I realized that my precious little gem didn't "see" impossibilities!  She was in there engaging with the other kids and the instructor and of course me. It opened my eyes to the reason Glitzy Style has evolved is because of the plight of gyrls!  We need to find ways to keep that spark alive because there are too many possibilities to face!

Face The Possible because IT IS POSSIBLE!!!!

I knew it was POSSIBLE when she was 4 weeks old! I so happy so knows not of impossibilities!

Reinvention

Tuesday, March 19, 2013 0
When I think about reinvention, I often think EVERYTHING has to be changed.  Where did I get that from????  When we work on ourselves or a project where does it say we should reinvent the wheel?  Somehow I received that erroneous memo.  I have been thinking about how I was going to reinvent Glitzy Style since the beginning of the year, actually since I became a mother again 7 months ago.  As I was thinking about it today, my baby was practicing her crawling skills and I had a light bulb moment!!!  When I became a mother again last August things changed, they changed in a major way but I still drew from my experiences from being a mother for nearly 20 years.  So why was I trying to make things so difficult for me! So please share this journey with me!  I am rebuilding my brand. So, I will be reinventing no breathing new life into my brand and sharing the process with you.  I am counting on you all to help me along because this is all about "Every Girl Is A Celebrity"!  We are not ageist so it does matter if you are an infant or 108, Glitzy Style is "Where Every Girl Is a Celebrity!".

Helping your Tween/Teenaged Daughter Develop a Healthy Body Image

Tuesday, February 21, 2012 0
“I’m fat!” “I’m ugly!” “I have nothing to wear that doesn’t make me look gross!”

As Spring draws near we are going focus on girls self image and how we can continue to reinforce a positve self image this week.

Despite all your pep talks and positive reinforcement, you can’t seem to get through to your daughter. She’s unhappy with her appearance and convinced that everyone else is looking at her with judgment. You’re sad that she’s so one, too focused on her physical appearance and second, doesn’t appreciate her unique beauty. How do you help your daughter develop a healthy body image?

Healthy self esteem comes from the inside. As much as we would like to be able to pour it into our kids like a bucket, it isn’t that simple. However, there ARE ways we as parents can help:
Studies show that girls who play sports have a more positive body image than girls who don’t. It’s important for girls to play sports or do some kind of challenging physical activity so that they learn to appreciate their bodies for what they can DO instead of only what they look like. This is very important. If your daughter isn’t into soccer or tennis, how about martial arts, ballet or dance? Learning to carry oneself with pride and a growing sense of accomplishment as one meets challenges is how self esteem is built.

Try a reality check. Look at fashion magazines with your daughter and talk about how the photos are airbrushed and how the models are made-up by a team of experts. The reality is, no fashion model or actress actually looks like that when she wakes up in the morning! Help her understand that these images are not “real”. You may want to place a limit on how many of these magazines you allow your daughter to read. They can have a negative impact on a young woman’s self image.

Emphasize good health over looks. Not every body type has the genetics to be a size 2, but you can be healthy and feel great at a size 12. Taking good care of our skin and hair helps us glow from the inside. Girls need to find their comfortable weight and love themselves for who they are instead of comparing themselves to others. Emphasizing nutrition and exercise will help your daughter maximize her natural assets. Healthy and happy is always in style.

Help her pick out clothing that is flattering to her body. Girls want to wear what everyone else is wearing. Unfortunately not all cuts are becoming to all body sizes and shapes. Find some good books at the library that show you how to dress for your body shape. Wearing the right colors for your skin tone, hair and eye color also helps you look your best.

While you are working toward building your daughter’s image, remind her siblings and father that teasing, name calling and rude comments about their sister’s looks will not be tolerated. Avoid watching TV programs and movies that emphasize physical beauty too much or that promote a disrespectful attitude towards women and their bodies.

Finally, if your teen is overweight, institute an exercise / healthy eating program as a family. Start going for walks or runs with her, begin a sport together, join a ladies only gym. Getting active and exercising regularly boosts the mood and encourages more activity even before the weight starts to come off, creating a positive cycle. An overweight teen is going to have a low self image in our thin obsessed society. Work together as a family – it will go a long way in helping your teen daughter develop a healthy body image.

Which is best: Short or Tall?

Monday, November 14, 2011 0
Really, which is better for girls?  Does even matter?  Many girls are so consumed about their heights and are being teased because they are one or the other.  (Remember teasing is a form of bullying.) In actuality, it doesn't matter what height anyone is as we are all individuals.  Children begin to learn the differences in height most when they begin in school. Do you remember the teacher saying "Line up from the shortest to the tallest". Always being the tallest kid in my class really hurt in that situation.  There really wasn't a reason for me to be upset, but as a young girl it pointed out that I was different, which girls need to know is okay.

Parents should reinforce that height is generally inherited genes from the parents. All kids go through growth spurts which at times could be a big difference or shift of who is taller or shorter. It is possible to grow as much as 4 inches during puberty.

The important thing that parents can do for their children is reinforce the are special just as they are.  As a parent, you would be the best to determine what helps your child.  When I was growing up, when someone called me tall, I learned to respond "Nope, I am average", think everyone was confused.  Later, I found a Tshirt that really reinforced my height and I was never was self conscious again.  The Tshirt said "Tall and Terrific"  The bottom line is everyone is perfect in his or her own way.

So, never forget to really help boost your child's self esteem.  Different doesn't equate to negativity.

When I think of elegance in the jewelry I think of pearls. I believe all ladies should own a strand of pearls. I am a firm believer that we should start our little ladies in pearls. I bought my daughter's first pair for her Baptism and it is now a keepsake. I would love to say I made it but I had not discovered my passion to design. My suggestion for our little ladies is to start off with high quality glass pearls. I have never seen a glass pearl break. You can get the size according to your young lady and your taste. You can use freshwater pearls which are less expensive and adorable. They come in different sizes and shapes. Cultured pearls are the most desired but the most desired. Pearls can be worn with anything and still be classy. Who is your favorite pearl wearing lady? I will share mine with you, it is The First Lady, Michelle Obama.

Doesn't she look lovey?  She is styling three different outfits and wearing pearls.  Isn't she the epitome of Elegance?

2011 Fall/Winter Clothing Trends

Wednesday, August 31, 2011 1

This fall is filled with so many lovely trends I have chosen to only speak five of them.  I am sure you will agree that the are wonderful and easy to try:
  1. High collars, they are not only fashionable, they are very practical as well.  In addition to looking stylish, it will keep you warm and cozy, not to mention protecting you from the cool/cold winds.
  2. Sexy Turtlenecks are a must be in your wardrobe.  It seems that ordinarily we would not appear to be sexy.  The way you style the turtleneck will make all the difference.  Try to mix colors and add some funky accessories and the turtleneck will become a very stylish piece to wear.
  3. Maxi Dresses are still a wonderful trend, personally I love Maxi Dresses. It shows your femininity. So ladies, if you want to feel or look lady like, the maxi dress is a great option.  There are so many looks everyone is sure to find the look that would look perfect for them.
  4. As a huge contrast, military looks are big trend this fall.  It is growing in its popularity with women. Gisele Bunching wore it on the cover of Vogue, with that said, I think the trend will be out there this fall/winter.
  5. Lastly, but certainly not least, patchwork is a big trend.  Creativity is key to this look.  You cannot over do your accessories are the look will fail, however, if you wear none, you will appear to be missing something. The best thing about patchwork, is that you will definitely stand out from the crowd.  This look allows many options.
I hope these tips are helpful, please give some feedback about  what you think about the trends.

My Epiphany!

Wednesday, July 27, 2011 0

Have you ever been in a place in your life where you have so many things going through your mind to put in action, you are dumbfounded? Well, I have been in that space the six weeks. I just held fast to my faith that I would get a breakthrough. I have been working towards the greatness that I know that Glitzy Style is destined to be. As uncomfortable as this place has been for me I feel that it was necessary so that I could dig deep and search for what is right for Glitzy Style. I did find it strange that I would feel the way I did while physically I was unable to do much. Today, yet again, I had to go to urgent care to get chest pain evaluated and was blessed to have a favorable outcome but I still had Glitzy on my mind. I realized on my way home from the doctor's visit that sometimes we have to sit still and listen carefully because the answers are being whispered in our ears. I FINALLY HAD MY EPIPHANY!!!! It was not much new, but a new outlook. I am no longer waiting for the other shoe to drop. Things are falling into place in a way that I would have never imagined.

Earlier this month, I had the privilege to consult with Michele Scism, "The Results Lady", and the meeting was awesome, she and I have been in the same place and I will have the opportunity to learn from her. How awesome is that! A new vendor that I had grown accustomed to is no longer doing any small projects, she will still work with me on projects but no longer the little things I need in a hurry. I did just a little checking and I found someone who was able to help me with the need I had at hand. Notice, I said the need I had at hand, which means I still did not have anyone to handle all of my needs. Out of nowhere, the person who I originally worked with when Glitzy was just a thought became available to do some work with me. So, no stress there.....NONE!!! Everything is just falling into place and it just so awesome to watch God work for me. I have joined an awesome group of women to network with in my are, Atlanta Women Entrepreneurs which truly is, a Godsend.

The many obstacles that seemed to face Glitzy seem to be just moved and I am not going to just sit and watch, I am going to be an active participant. Growth takes time, but when the time is right it is time to hold on tight, roll up my sleeves and rise to the challenge.

I am not 100% physically yet, but I am able to do a lot more so now I will be putting my best foot forward and providing the quality services that Glitzy Style has to offer. So, be on the look out because you will be seeing exciting things coming your way.

Thank you so much for all of your support! The prayers and well wishes which have come my way have humbled and blessed me. I love you all for believing in me when this was just my dream which is now a reality.
